Germany Master’s Timeline for Winter 2027: Start Before Deadline Panic

For Indian students · Sources checked 18 October 2026

If your application plan is “I’ll sort it out when the deadline gets closer”, future-you would like a word. University applications have a habit of becoming a group project involving your college, a test centre, a bank and several inboxes.

For winter 2027, build your timeline around the earliest deadline on your actual shortlist. The calendar below is a suggested working plan. It is not a list of official university deadlines, and a programme may require you to act much earlier.

First, make a deadline sheet that deserves your trust

Give every course its own row. Add the university, exact degree title, intake, application opening date, deadline, application route, required documents, language evidence and official source link. Save the date you last checked it. “Germany deadline” is too broad to be useful.

Check whether your route is a direct university application, a uni-assist application, or a VPD followed by a separate university application. For the VPD route, requesting the document is only one stage: you still apply to the university yourself. uni-assist explains the VPD process here.

October–December 2026: build the foundation

Choose the subject you actually want to study, then compare it with your bachelor’s modules. Gather transcripts, your university’s grading scale and course descriptions. If your degree certificate is pending, check each university’s accepted alternative rather than assuming one provisional document works everywhere.

Start a language-evidence plan and check the current APS checklist for your applicant group. Give any additional test requirement its own task. Put costs beside tasks too; our Germany budget guide can help you build that part of the sheet.

January–March 2027: test the shortlist

Read admission regulations, not only the attractive course overview. Check subject requirements, grade rules, language requirements and whether the course actually admits students in winter 2027. Start any route whose deadline falls in this period.

For unclear requirements, write a short, answerable question to the programme office. “Does my thermodynamics module meet this requirement?” is more useful than “Am I eligible for your university?” Attach documents only through channels the institution requests.

April–June 2027: submit in calm batches

Work backwards from each course’s deadline. Reserve time to correct a missing document, obtain a clearer scan or complete a required preliminary evaluation. uni-assist recommends requesting a VPD ideally at least eight weeks before the university deadline; its general VPD guidance gives a usual processing period of four to six weeks. These are planning guides, not guaranteed turnaround times. Check the current guidance.

Submit the best-prepared application first, then use your own checklist to inspect the next one. Reusing a university name in the wrong motivation letter is a very efficient way to feel annoyed with yourself.

July–September 2027: decisions and departure planning

Continue only with applications whose published windows remain open. Compare offers by course content, conditions, total costs and acceptance dates. Begin housing research early, while checking cancellation terms before paying anything.

Use the German Missions in India for current visa instructions and financial-evidence requirements. Build a realistic sequence for the documents your case requires. An admission offer, accommodation booking and visa decision are separate milestones.

A weekly routine that keeps things moving

Use clear filenames, one folder per university and a separate folder for reusable originals. Record the date and wording of important university replies. Your inbox should support the plan, rather than become the plan.

What if you are already behind?

Drop the idea that every course belongs in the same application round. Identify what you can still submit properly, check alternative intakes and keep a realistic backup. A rushed application with missing requirements is expensive homework.

Bring the tracker to your Laksyon consultation. The useful question is: what must happen next for each course on this shortlist?
